Here is the list of Top 10 and more best gift ideas. If you are in a hurry to get perfect MTG gift for 2019 there’s a recap – Best Gift Ideas for MTG for any budget at the bottom.
Let’s start with a gift that’s a guaranteed hit – booster box. Each booster box contains 36 booster packs. Every booster pack contains 15 cards plus one token card:
- 10 common cards
- 3 uncommon cards
- 1 rare or mythic rare card
- 1 land or premium card
- 1 token card
Every Magic the Gathering player enjoys opening boosters. How would we not? Getting a booster box is like opening a gift and finding to find bunch of extra gifts. It’s totally awesome.
Every three months there is a new Booster Box and the best idea is to get the newest one. The latest one was Ravnica Allegiance and it’s full of exciting and powerful cards – which make a great gift for MTG.
Next edition releases on May 3rd, 2019. If you’re reading this only a couple of days before that, it might be better to wait for it. If you can’t wait, don’t worry. Ravnica Allegiance is one of the best editions in the last couple of years. This means everyone would be glad to get it as a gift.
Bundle is perhaps one of the best gift ideas for MTG if you don’t want to spend too much money on it. It has all of the benefits of a booster box in a smaller – and cheaper package. They come with only 10 boosters, but with some really cool extras:
- 80 basic lands (awesome for new player)
- 20-sided dice
- booklet with Magic lore and information
- useful sturdy box
As mentioned the Bundle comes with basic lands. While enfranchised players already have plenty of them, new players often don’t. Because of that, they’ll be very happy with MTG Bundle as a gift. You can get a Bundle here.
Differently from boosters, you know exactly which cards you’ll get in the preconstructed decks.
We would recommend those to both newer and more experienced players.
They are good for beginners because the decks are complete and ready to play right out of the box. On the other hand, they contain some pretty strong cards, which more experienced players know to appreciate.
Commander is one of most popular ways to play MTG. So if you heard that the recipient likes playing it, this is a perfect choice.
You get 100-cards in a ready-to-play deck. Some of them are even premium. Even if they don’t like Commander that much, this decks contain cards for everyone. There are brand new cards in this product, which haven’t been released in any other set.
You can check the latest ones here, or maybe get a package deal containing all of them. If you’re thinking about getting them you can also check our great guide on how to upgrade Lord Windgrace Commander deck.
If you’re gifting someone who prefers playing with 60-card decks. This is a better gift for them.
Guild Kits are 60 card decks which contain:
- 1 Premium Card
- 3 Alternate Art Cards
- Special Basic Lands
- 1 Pin
Decks are built around 5 out of 10 guilds of Ravnica. They contain awesome cards and ever better looking basic lands. The five decks are also pretty balanced against each other. This way those five decks are an awesome gift for a group of Magic the Gathering players.
You can buy a specific Magic the Gathering card. You won’t get a randomness of a booster box but you can give them the perfect card they need which can be a lot better.
The problem with this gift not knowing which card they want. In this case it’s probably not a good idea to just buy some singles at random. But you can still just ask them which one they are looking forward to getting.
If you want to buy a single card, you can take a look at a list of some of most universally sought after cards.
Magic the Gathering Board Game
Magic the Gathering released two special variations of their game. They combine the elements of other board games with MTG cards. Great gift for players who also enjoy other board games!
Explorers of Ixalan
One is called Explorers of Ixalan.
This variation is for 2 – 4 players. In addition to playing a game of Magic, players also explore the island of Ixalan. The island provides additional resources and extra layer of game-play.
Explorers of Ixalan can also be played without the island, since you get 4 complete 60-card decks. Game is great gift for a player who has a couple of games under their belt and would enjoy a new experience.
Archenemy: Nicol Bolas
This is a game mode for 4 players (3 vs 1). One player plays the role of Nicol Bolas, the Elder Dragon. His cards are so powerful that other three players have to play as a team to have a chance against him.
Both games are great gifts for an experienced Magic the Gathering player. Both are ready to play out of the box and can be used as a single board game. You can check its price here.
Premium Magic the Gathering Products
The newest Magic product surely delivers. You get 8 selected card centred around a character from Magic lore. Each card also has a special design made especially for this series.
On top of that you also get a premium foil card and everything is packed in a very beautiful box which is perfect for Magic the Gathering gift.
Currently there is only Signature Spellbook: Jace focused on the blue mind mage, but there are plenty more to come.
We already told you about Booster Box. But there’s even more exclusive gift – special Booster Boxes, such as Iconic Masters.
This Booster Box is more expensive, even though it contains fewer booster packs (24 instead of 36). The reason for this is that it’s filled with some of the most iconic and powerful Magic the Gathering cards of all time. Each pack also contains a guaranteed premium foil card.
If money is not an issue, we definitely think Masters Editions are a splendid gift idea.
You thought Magic the Gathering players only need cards to play this game? Well, that’s not entirely true. There are plenty of stuff that makes the game more enjoyable and as such makes a great gift.
What good is a box for a gift? Not much, since every Magic player probably has a lot of plastic ones. But there are a lot of quality ones, which always come in handy. You can buy one like this.
It’s very resistant and looks nice. It also has a special trey for dice. They will have the gift for many years to come and it’s very useful.
If you want a your deck box to be even more special gift, there is something really cool that we would recommend. Ultimate Guard’s ChromiaSkin deck box has heat-sensitive material that changes it’s color wherever someone touches it. It looks totally dope!
There are also some simpler designs, which still do their main function and are cheaper.
Every Magic the Gathering player needs a binder to store their more valuable cards. The binders come in various colors and sizes.
You can check their prices here.
You are probably quite familiar with the fact that some cards can be worth quite some money. That’s one of the reasons why Magic players like to keep their cards in sleeves. And it also makes shuffling easier.
You can get plenty of different arts, so pick whichever you think the recipient will like. But there are plenty of sleeves that wear off quickly and split.
We would recommend getting either Dragon Shield Matte or Ultra Pro Eclipse. Both of these are very durable and nice looking. If you like your gift to be something practical, sleeves are certainly the way to go.
If you’ll be buying Ultra Pros be very careful to buy Eclipse version, since the other ones are some of the worst ones.
It’s never pleasant to play Magic on a not so clean table. That’s where the playmats help. The cards don’t get dirty, players can pick them up more easily and they can be a work of art.
Playmats can also be stored in a tube, so if you are buying one, it’s a good idea to buy one of these.
Playmats can also be used as a big mouse pads. However if the player already has a playmat or two, it might be a better idea to buy something else.
Beware of the Following “Gifts”
There are however some offerings you should think twice about buying. This products are NOT a good Magic the Gathering gifts and you should really prioritise something else.
Bulk Magic Cards
1000 cards for $10 – what could go wrong? This gift idea is good for brand new players. For anyone who plays a game a bit longer the cards are basically worthless and they just take extra space to store them.
You are paying for quantity over quality. A single card worth 10$ could be a more meaningful gift.
Gift boxes were amazing. You got 4-5 boosters, a promo card, bunch of stickers and dividers. Everything comes in the nice box, useful for storing Magic cards.
What’s the problem? Quality of the box really varies with some of the newer boxes. And they also stopped doing them a couple of years back. You can still get them, but the boosters you get with them are not as valuable as they were when the boxes came out.
However they may still be a good gift idea for a less enfranchised player.
So called proxy cards are nothing more than fake cards. Cards may be cheaper but the player could get in trouble if they would play them in a tournament.
Never buy those.
Sellers of so called repacks usually buy sealed product, they take the valuable cards out. They add some of the worst rares they have to the pack. You can usually find those as “Repack Booster with Two Rare Cards!”.
Don’t buy this as a gift since you’ll probably just overpay for garbage cards.
