Maro’s Brothers’ War Teaser

As always, Mark Rosewater, the Head Designer for MTG, posted a teaser for this set on his Blogatog. In it, he posts tidbits of interesting information about the set. Let’s find out what he said this time around.

Creature Types

Here are some interesting creature types that will appear in The Brothers’ War:

  • Elf Druid Soldier
  • Human Artificer Scout
  • Minotaur Barbarian
  • Mole Horror
  • Phyrexian Human Assassin

We’ll also have information about two artifact creatures. One is an Ape, and the other is Phyrexian Wurm. Perhaps, Wurmcoil Engine got compleated?

There’s also a card that does something whenever you cast a Beast or a Bird spell, so we’ll probably see some of them as well.

Legendary Creatures

For Commander fans, here are three legendary creature types:

  • Elf Druid Scout
  • Human Artificer Advisor
  • Human Wizard Advisor

Actually, there will be over ten legendary Human Artificers. Now, that’s quite a lot of them.

Text Snippets

Furthermore, here are some text snippets from the cards in the set. Note that these are usually just a part of a card’s text, and not the complete rules box.

  • “Create a tapped 3/3 colorless Zombie artifact creature token.”
  • “Create a tapped Powerstone token for each other creature you control.”
  • “For each card type among noncreature spells you’ve cast this turn,”
  • “Gains your choice of flying, vigilance, deathtouch, or haste.”
  • “Look at the cards in each pile, then turn a pile of your choice face up.”
  • “Permanents you control have ‘Ward – Sacrifice a permanent.’”
  • “Put a +1/+1 counter on target Assembly-Worker you control.”
  • “Whenever one or more creatures with mana value 3 or less enter the battlefield under your control,”
  • “Whenever you cast an artifact spell with mana value 6 or greater,”

Things to Expect

Finally, here are some things that you can expect from The Brothers’ War:

  • a command with X in its mana cost
  • a new Onulet (the original one is simply called Onulet)
  • a spell that mimics an element of the effect of a creature that was originally printed with the picture of a World Champion on it (perhaps Snapcaster Mage‘s effect)
  • a Teferi with a new way to gain loyalty counters
  • a white creature that taps to let you and an opponent draw a card
  • another card with “end the turn”
  • equipment with “Equip Soldier”
  • one colored artifact
  • protection from everything returns

That’s it for the Maro’s teaser. If you have any ideas or predictions of what these might be about, let us know in the comments below.

Brothers’ War Story

Contrary to the most Magic sets, the Brothers’ War isn’t focusing on the “present” in the MTG lore, but instead it’s all about a single, albeit significant event from the past. That event being the war between two brothers, Urza (Urza, Lord High Artificer) and Mishra (Mishra, Artificer Prodigy).

Urza, Lord High Artificer Brothers' War Spoilers

It’s quite unusual for something like that to happen, especially, since this set follows Dominaria United, in which the good guys fight against Phyrexians. That story line is supposed to take place over four sets, which includes the Brothers’ War. Some players speculate that we’re in for some time travel shenanigans.

In that case, it would make sense to bring new players up to speed with some events from the past. The Brothers’ War was first described in the Antiquities set. That ways way back in 1994, so almost 30 years ago.

However, we certainly don’t know all the information about the war yet. Some things that we do know is that the brothers fought over two halves of the Thran Powerstone. The war ended when Urza used the Golothian Sylex, which supposedly killed Mishra, who had been consumed by Phyrexians. In that even, Urza’s spark was ignited.

Predictions

So based on the story, what predictions can we make about the Brothers’ War? Of course, it’s pretty safe to say that both Urza and Mishra will get new cards, and possibly quite powerful ones.

Since many artifacts were used during the war, one could expect this set to have an artifact theme, or at least a sub-theme. Wizards have moved away from generic powerful colorless artifacts, so we might see strong colored artifacts instead.

Many other characters from Dominaria’s history could also make a return, especially those who were around in that time. Perhaps, someone like Bo Levar, who doesn’t actually have a card, although he is depicted on Planeswalker’s Mischief.

Conclusion

That’s all about the Brothers’ War spoilers and information. If you have any predictions of your own, you can leave a comment below. Don’t forget that we’ll probably have some extra information to share later today, so check back soon! You can also find more information about the upcoming MTG sets here.
