Modern Horizons 2 Spoilers and Information

Wizards of the Coast announced plenty of stuff in their Summer Legend announcement. One of the most exciting content were certainly Modern Horizons 2 spoilers. In this article we’ll take a look at all currently available spoilers. Additionally, we’ll talk about which different boosters we’re getting, when the set releases and more!

Modern Horizons 2 Spoilers

Spoilers for non-Standard sets usually start around three weeks before the prerelease. Apart form the early teasers, the spoilers started on May 20, 2021. You can find all of them below.

We’re also getting 40 old border reprints from Modern Horizons 1. Here are a couple of examples and you can also find all old border MH2 cards here.

What is Modern Horizons 2?

The first set contained just new cards. The MH2 however, will contain a mix of new cards and reprints. The set is also balanced around draft, and it should provide a fun draft experience.

First Modern Horizons set came out in June 2019. It featured brand new cards meant for Modern. Cards from this set didn’t become Standard legal, but are legal in Modern. This set allows Wizards to design cards specifically for Modern, without them entering Standard.

Modern Horizons 2 Products

Last time around, Modern Horizons got only regular Draft Boosters. This will not be the here, as we’re getting 4 different boosters / packs:

  • Draft Boosters
  • Set Boosters
  • Collector Boosters
  • Prerelease Packs

Draft Boosters

Draft boosters are your regular boosters, which have been around for ever. They are the best for drafting. If MH2 is anything like its predecessor, we’re in for an amazing draft format.

If you’re planning on drafting read all about it in our Modern Horizons 2 Draft Guide.

Set Boosters

Set Boosters are for players who like to just open their boosters and don’t care about drafting. While they are a bit pricier, than Draft Boosters, they do contain the same amount of rares per dollar spent. On average they contain more exciting cards, which makes it a better product to just open for fun.

Collector Boosters

Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Box

Modern Horizons 2 also has Collector Boosters. These are the best of the best, the most premium boosters (and their price reflects that.) All cards in there are either foils or have alternate artworks and/or frames.

It’s the best product for collectors who want the most special cards, and don’t care too much about the higher price. You can find more about Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster contents here.

Anyways MH2 will be the first non-Standard set that will feature both Set boosters and Prerelease packs. If you’re a bit confused about so many different boosters, this MTG Booster Pack Guide explains the difference between them.

Modern Horizons 2 Release Date

Modern Horizons 2 release date is June 11, 2021. That’s between Strixhaven and Forgotten Realms sets. However, you’ll be able to play with the cards on week before. How? In the MH2 prerelease event.

Prerelease

This is the first MTG non-Standard set that will have Prerelease packs. So naturally, there will be prerelease events. These events can happen between June 4 – June 10. If you’re planning on attending, you should probably contact your game store, to find out when and how exactly will they run Modern Horizons 2 prerelease events.

Each Prerelease Kit will contain six boosters and a promo card. It’ll probably work in the same way as the regular prerelease promo. This means you’ll get a additional rare or mythic rare (a random one from the set) with a date stamped on it.

Maro’s Modern Horizons 2 Teaser

Before we wrap up, here’s some more information that we can share with you. Mark Rosewater (aka. Maro), the Head Designer for MTG has yet again posted a ton of teasers for the new set. Let’s take a look.

Legendary Characters

Commander players will probably be happy to learn that some characters from Magic’s history will finally get a legendary creature card:

  • one of them is best know for having his name on a powerful banned card
  • second one has first appeared in a Magic novel
  • another is a fan favorite animal character

There will also be a planeswalker from the past that previously only had a legendary creature card. As the art on the Draft Booster box suggest, this is almost certainly Dakkon Blackblade.

Dakkon Blackblade Modern Horizons 2 Spoilers

Additionally, we know three interesting creature type combinations that appear on three legendary creatures. They are:

  • Merfolk God
  • Snake Elf Scout
  • Squirrel Warrior

More Creature Types

Maro also previewed some interesting type lines from various cards (mostly creatures):

  • Artifact Creature – Assembly-Worker
  • Artifact Creature – Clue Myr
  • Creature – Dinosaur Illusion
  • Creature – Dauthi Rogue
  • Creature – Skeleton Shaman
  • Creature – Elemental Incarnation
  • Tribal Artifact – Lhurgoyf

Modern Horizons 2 is also bring us a new Frog creature, that has been 26 years in the making. What could it possibly be?

Modern Horizons 2 Mechanics

Clue Token

At least 59 mechanics will appear in this set. Now that’s a lot of them. Here’s what we know about them so far:

  • split mechanic is returning with new cards
  • investigate is coming back (featured at least on one white enchantment)
  • a Future Sight mechanic will be reused for the first time

A theme that only briefly appeared in the original Modern Horizons set, will get a larger presence.

Text Snippets

Finally, there are some text snippets from various cards from MH2. Some of them are pretty weird:

  • “… for each other Ooze you control.”
  • “… instead create one of each.”
  • “Choose a number between 1 and 5. Flip that many coins.”
  • “four” and “fourteen” appearing on a card
  • “If an ability of a ??? or another ??? you control triggers, that ability triggers an additional time.”
  • “If an Insect card was milled this way,”
  • “Protection from permanents with corruption counters on them”
  • “This ability costs 1 less to activate for each +1/+1 counter on creatures you control.”
  • “Trample over planeswalkers”
  • “Whenever you cast your third spell each turn,”
  • “You may sacrifice a Mountain rather than pay this spell’s mana cost.”
