Why Are Magic Players Hyped for This Set?

Here are five reasons why Secrets of Strixhaven set is already quite popular. (Some of these probably carry more weight than the others.)

#1 It’s a Traditional Magic Set

With every second set nowadays being a Universes Beyond set, most Magic players are craving proper Magic setting.

Stirixhaven certainly delivers on that front as a pristine MTG plane. You won’t find slightly different-looking turtle or Spider-Man on every card. Furthermore, there are no weird pizzas and the background isn’t New York.

Instead, we’re getting the familiar magical school, with some new twists added to keep things fresh. It just feel like a proper Magic set, which is currently a major selling point.

#2 Bonus Sheet is Actually Good Once Again

When they were first introduced, bonus sheets used to be awesome. You were kinda getting an additional slot in each of your boosters for an alt-art card.

Sometimes you could pull a money rare and that obviously felt great. But even when the card wasn’t worth much, it still looked spectacular and it likely had a home, even if in a specific format.

However, as the time went on the bonus sheets cards became rarer and rarer. No longer were you guaranteed to open one in every pack. Instead the odds worsened dramatically. (Most recently, just 1 in 25 Play boosters contained such a card.)

Thankfully, we’re going back to the good old times with Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive cards.

Once again, you can expect an iconic alt-art instant or sorcery from Magic’s past in every Secrets of Strixhaven Play booster. That’s 30 of them per booster box, which is a massive increase, and a big reason for why this set seems so popular.

#3 It Features a Large Commander Release

Commander is the most popular Magic the Gathering format. Thus, it shouldn’t be a large surprise that a big draw toward this set is the largest Commander release of the year with 5 different precons.

In most sets nowadays we’re getting just two. Therefore, it’s likely that those specific colors don’t suit you, or that you simply dislike the themes.

With five different options, this becomes much less likely, and there’s probably something for everyone withing this decks. There’s enchantments, big spells, sacrifice, graveyard, and even X-spells synergies!

#4 First Spoilers Look Extremely Promising

Even though we’ve seen just a couple of spoilers, they both look exciting, fun and pretty distinct designs.

The new Lorehold grants miracle to all of your instant and sorceries, and that mechanic can be bonkers good with a proper setup. On top of that, we’re now adding exponential functions to Magic the Gathering! (Okay, maybe that one only excites a few match nerds, such as myself.)

On top of that, even the commons look pretty neat considering their rarity. If the other cards follow in a similar vein, we’re in for a banger of a set.

#5 A Special Bundle Might Be Better Than Ever

This probably doesn’t move the needle as much as some other reasons, but still — the new Codex Bundle looks pretty dope and better than the usual special Bundles.

It’s design is unique, it contains two Collector boosters (as opposed to just one in the previous Bundles) and staple Commander cards as promos. What’s not to like?

You can find Codex Bundle contents here, including the 6 promo cards with Strixhaven themed-art. (Spoiler alert: there’s a new Sol Ring among them!)

Mtg needs to stop doing so much ub stuff!
Final fantasy was expertly crafted. Avatar was ok. But we need a whole year I think of more original ip content.

    • Agreed. As much of a TMNT fan as I am (the actual comics and shows/ movies, I mean), it’s still not MAGIC Magic.

Let’s get back to our roots!
