Staring with a new card game, such as Yu-Gi-Oh is always exciting. You’re figuring things out, learning new mechanics and combos. However, it can also be a bit daunting, with so many products to choose from. This article is here to help you with that, by answering the question: “What should a Yu-Gi-Oh beginner buy?”
We’ll explore the best products for a brand-new player, who wants to start playing this amazing card game. The first one on the list is already a spectacular one, so let’s take a look.
2-Player Starter Set
For quite a while, Yu-Gi-Oh offerings for a brand-new player were somewhat lacking. Especially, compared to other card games such as MTG and Pokémon. There were Starter decks, but those had some problems. However, all of that changed with the 2-Player Starter Set, which was released on January 26th, 2024.
This is the perfect product to start playing the game. It comes with 2 different ready-to-play decks with 44 cards each (two 40-decks with two 4-card extra decks). Among these cards, you’ll find 80 commons and 8 Ultra rares.
In short, it contains everything you need to start playing a game of Yu-Gi-Oh with your friend, family member, or by yourself. But wait, what about rules?
Don’t worry, those are also included in a 64-page comic book. It walks you through a scripted Duel to teach you all the basics you need to know. Learning the game has never been so much fun before.
All in all, if you only buy one item to start playing the game, it should be the 2-Player Starter Set. Plus, you can get it for extremely low price, so you don’t need to invest a lot to learn the game.
Structure Decks
One problem with the previous product is that it doesn’t contain many powerful cards. If you’re familiar with other trading card games, and don’t need to learn all the basics, you might prefer the Structure decks.
These are stronger, and contain 48 cards (40 commons, 3 Super rares, 5 Ultra rares). The interactions are more complex, and there’s no rule booklet. However, that’s the price to pay for playing a better deck. There’s a wide variety of Structure decks, the ones you saw above is called Fire Kings, and is pretty good, as far as these decks go.
Now, if you want to start playing tournaments, and really optimize your Structure deck, the general wisdom is to buy three copies of the same deck.
That might be a bit weird, but the reason for that is that you can then play multiples of your best cards. The deck becomes much more consistent when you do so. While you can technically play a Structure deck out of the box, you won’t be winning with it in any competitive setting.
Of course, if you’re planning on only playing casually at home with your friends, you can still use a single deck, as it came out of the box. Of course, under the assumption, that the other players aren’t playing optimized decks.
What About Boosters?
Opening boosters is fun! There’s always the thrill of possibility of opening a chase rare. However, is a booster box a good buy for a new Yu-Gi-Oh player? Most likely not, if you plan on playing the game.
If you buy a whole booster box, you probably won’t be able to build a viable deck from the cards you opened. Particularly, if you never played the game before. Now, if you already own a deck, like the Structure deck we’ve mentioned before, it can be fine to open a box. Perhaps you’ll find some cards that you can put in your deck and remove some weaker ones.
Of course, if you only plan to collect cards, and not play with them, then buying some boosters is a nice way to start a collection. If you don’t know which to pick, it’s usually a good idea to go with the latest one. As of writing this article, the latest one is Phantom Nightmare, released on February 9th, 2024.
Additionally, you can find the best Yu-Gi-Oh booster boxes here. Just keep in mind, that if you want to play the game, you want to acquire some decks first.
Card Sleeves
For this Yu-Gi-Oh Beginner’s Buyer Guide, we mostly wanted to focus on card products. However, among many accessories, there’s one that you should really include in your first purchase. That would be sleeves, of course.
They’ll serve two main functions. First, they protect your cards from damage. Certain cards can be quite valuable, but their price plummets if they’re in bad condition. Even a few games without sleeves can quickly damage your cards. Second, the sleeves make shuffling easier and more enjoyable.
While a Yu-Gi-Oh player can avoid most of the other accessories, sleeves really are a must-have item. Note that you don’t want to get standard sized sleeves. Those are meant for other TCGs, like Magic the Gathering and Pokémon. Yu-Gi-Oh cards are smaller, so you want to get so-called Japanese size card sleeves.
The ones you saw above are from Dragon Shield, and are of a great quality. Of course, you could also pick one of the many Yu-Gi-Oh-themed sleeves.
A Great Way to Learn: Master Duel
Before we wrap up, here’s one final piece of advice. If you want to learn the game, and don’t have anyone to teach you, there’s an online version of the game called Master Duel. You can battle against other players, but we’d recommend you start with Solo Modes. There’s the tutorial, as well as “Duel Strategy” mode, both of which can help you understand the rules better.
The game is available on practically every console, from PC to PlayStation to Android. The game also offers a somewhat viable free-to-play strategy, which is always welcome. Especially, when you’re just starting out and unsure if you’ll even like the game.
Conclusion
Anyway, that’s it for today. Now, you should have a good idea of what to buy for Yu-Gi-Oh beginner. If you are buying cards for someone else, you might want to check our Yu-Gi-Oh Gift Guide, in which you’ll discover some amazing gift ideas.
