Avatar Jumpstart Boosters: Contents

Each Avatar: the Last Airbender Jumpstart booster contains 20 cards. Usually their distribution is as follows:

• 12 nonland cards (with 1-2 rares)
• 8 land cards (7 basics, 1 from the thriving cycle, like Thriving Bluff)

A whole Jumpstart booster box contains 24 boosters.

46 Different Themes

Contrary to the other boosters (Play and Collector) these aren’t completely randomized. Instead each Jumpstart pack contains one of 46 different themes (or decklists).

A specific theme contains the same cards across all boosters. A few possibilities would be: Fire Nation, Avatar Aang, White Lotus, Kyoshi Warriors, etc. The cards in a theme are tied together by flavor and mechanics.

Each of the five MTG colors gets 9 themes. That gives us 45 themes, so what’s the deal with the last one? Most likely, it’s going to be a five-color theme, centered around Aang’s Avatar form.

The themes and card lists haven’t been revealed yet.

How to Play Avatar Jumpstart?

1. You open two Avatar Jumpstart boosters and shuffle them together. That’s your deck.
2. Your opponent does the same.
3. Now you’ve got two decks, and you’re ready to play.

As you can see, it’s pretty simple. All you need to do is two boosters per player, and you’re ready to go. You don’t need to bother with lands or anything.

Are Avatar Jumpstart Boosters Worth Buying?

Great Way to Play

If you’re looking for some casual Magic gameplay, Jumpstart boosters scratch that itch perfectly. The decks aren’t super optimized, which can be really fun — the games will go long, and won’t be decided on turn 4. (As in some constructed formats.)

Furthermore, you won’t need to worry that someone will bring a too powerful deck to the table. Instead, the Jumpstart themes are fairly balanced between one another.

Do you prefer to play multiplayer games? You can do that as well. Just make sure you’ve got two boosters per player, and you’re ready to go.

Nice Option to Expand Avatar Collection

An important thing to note is that all cards in Jumpstart boosters are set in the ATLA world. That includes basic lands, and you can expect a full-art Appa land in every pack.

Thus, if you’re looking to acquire a bunch of Avatar cards for your collection (including basics, commons and uncommons), Jumpstart packs are great for that. As mentioned, you get 20 cards per pack, or 480 per box.

Not That Amazing If…

To be fair, Jumpstart boosters aren’t for everyone.

Let’s say you’re only looking for a few (1-5) specific rares and don’t really care about the rest. In that case, you’re better off with purchasing the singles on the secondary market. (For example, TCGPlayer has a great selection of Avatar singles.) This way, you’re likely getting them for cheaper, and you aren’t left with a bunch of cards you won’t use.

Furthermore, if you want to collect alternate-art, premium cards — you won’t find these in Jumpstart boosters. Instead they are available in Collector boosters. (And to a significantly lesser extent in Play boosters.)

But most importantly, if you don’t plan to play with Jumpstart boosters for whatever reason, they do lose a lot of their appeal. (Compared to the other two booster types.) Sure, you could open money rares, but you are losing a bunch of game play value by simply cracking them.

Consensus (TL;DR)

So, based on all that, Jumpstart boosters are worth buying if you plan to play with them, and if you’ve enjoyed the Avatar: The Last Airbender show.

If you want to crack packs Collector and Play boosters are better options. If you don’t like the setting, just skip this set, there are a bunch of other upcoming MTG sets to look forward to.

How to Get More Millage from Avatar Jumpstart Boosters?

The MSRP for the Avatar Jumpstart Booster Box is $168, which is a hefty price, even though you might get some value back with your pulls.

Thankfully, there is a way to get more out of your boosters, if you’re willing to put in a little work. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Get some sleeves. You can use regular ones or pro-fits, whichever suits you best.
2. For each booster you plan to open, mark 20 sleeves with a specific symbol.
3. When you open a booster, sleeve all of its cards into the same-marked sleeves.

Then you can play the games, as you would normally — you mash two piles together and you’ve got your deck. After you’re done, you separate the cards back.

Now you can mix-and-match the boosters any way you like. You’ve essentially turned your booster box into a self-contained board game, with tons of replayablity.

But that’s not all, though. There’s an additional way that you can experience Avatar Jumpstart — and for a really low price.

Avatar Beginner Box: A Great Budget Addition

With an MSRP of $35, the Beginner Box is the cheapest Avatar product, besides loose boosters. Among other things, this product contains 10 Jumpstart packs.

How come this comes so cheap? Because the 10 boosters are exactly the same across all Beginner Boxes. (You don’t get these themes in regular Jumpstart boosters.)

Thus, it doesn’t make sense to buy a ton of them. But if you’re simply looking for some fun and casual Magic, this is a nice product to buy. You can use it on its own or pair with regular Avatar Jumpstart packs for even more variety.
