Do you want to make your Allied Fires deck better? This Allied Fires Upgrade Guide will help you with that.
We wrote an upgrade guide for each of the four Challenger Decks of 2020. For each one of them there’s a budget upgrade (containing only cheaper cards) and a full upgrade (doesn’t care about cards prices). You can chose which one is right for you – or build something in between.

Allied Fires Budget Upgrade
Besides the main focus on Fires of Invention, the deck has two sub-themes. One is centered around Fae of Wishes and the other around Sarkhan the Masterless. Let’s take a look at both and figure what to do with them.
Your Wish is in the Sideboard

The first thing we want to do is to decide if we even want to play Fae of Wishes. We think the card works very nicely in this shell and therefore decided to keep it. To fully support it, we need four of them. Now we have to also add some great cards to the sideboard to get wish for:
We need Fires of Invention in play to cast the first three, but that’s okay. We won’t search for them unless we have the red enchantment.
Emergency Powers is just a fun-of. We want to cast it once we have Narset, Parter of Veils in play. This way you’ll replace your hand with seven new cards, but your opponent gets only one, thanks to the Narset’s passive ability.
Planeswalker Plan
The idea behind having so many planeswalker is to turn them into dragons with Sarkhan the Masterless. We still need to remove Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor, though. Sadly, she’s just too weak. Two Fae of Wishes took her place, along with one Chandra, Fire Artisan to keep Planeswalker count at least at 10.

The planeswalker plan is really hurting in our budget upgrade, since the best planeswalker Teferi, Time Raveler is quite expensive.
Manabase
Mana base is another place where our budget constraints hurt us. The three shock lands for the deck (Hallowed Fountain, Steam Vents and Sacred Foundry) are pricey. Thankfully Temples are cheap enough and they will replace the life-gain lands. The reason being that scrying is mostly better than gaining one life.
Besides, we also need to remove one Omen of the Sea, to make room for the fourth Deafening Clarion. This change is really needed since there are a bunch of aggressive decks running around and Clarion is one of the best ways to fight them.
The final decklist should look something like this:
Creature (5) 4 Fae of Wishes 1 Kenrith, the Returned King Planeswalker (11) 4 Narset, Parter of Veils 2 Saheeli, Sublime Artificer 1 Chandra, Fire Artisan 3 Sarkhan the Masterless 1 Ugin, the Ineffable Sorcery (8) 4 Deafening Clarion 2 Drawn from Dreams 2 Time Wipe Enchantment (9) 3 Omen of the Sea 2 Banishing Light 4 Fires of Invention Land (27) 1 Steam Vents 4 Temple of Enlightenment 4 Temple of Epiphany 4 Temple of Triumph 4 Interplanar Beacon 1 Swiftwater Cliffs 5 Island 2 Mountain 2 Plains | Sideboard (15) 1 Dovin's Veto 2 Fry 2 Revoke Existence 2 Devout Decree 1 Ashiok, Dream Render 1 Kaya’s Wrath 1 Mass Manipulation 1 Enter the God-Eternals 1 Sarkhan the Masterless 1 Time Wipe 1 Casualties of War 1 Emergency Powers |
- Cards added – main deck: 13
- Cards added – sideboard: 4
- Total: 17
If you want to continue with more pricey changes, you could add some of previously mentioned shock lands and Teferi, Time Raveler.
Allied Fires Upgrade – Full
For the full upgrade we decided to stick with both planeswalker and Fae of Wishes theme. If you want to have a true Tier 1 deck, Gabriel Nassif played Jeskai Fires to the fourth place at Magic World Championship. However, the deck is so much different from the one we have, that you have to change like 80% of it. That’s why we decided to stuck with previous theme.

In contrast to the budget upgrade, we added four Teferi, Time Raveler. This card alone makes the deck much better, giving us time to survive the early turns, while also destroying decks that want to cast cards on instant speed. We removed Saheeli and Chandra to make space for him.
Our mana base is now firing on all cylinders, since we have all the shock lands we need. This will help us cast our spells consistently.
All in all, the fully upgraded deck looks like this:
Creature (5) 4 Fae of Wishes 1 Kenrith, the Returned King Planeswalker (12) 4 Narset, Parter of Veils 4 Teferi, Time Raveler 3 Sarkhan the Masterless 1 Ugin, the Ineffable Sorcery (8) 4 Deafening Clarion 2 Drawn from Dreams 2 Time Wipe Enchantment (8) 2 Omen of the Sea 2 Banishing Light 4 Fires of Invention Land (27) 1 Castle Vantress 4 Hallowed Fountain 4 Interplanar Beacon 2 Island 2 Mountain 1 Plains 4 Sacred Foundry 4 Steam Vents 2 Temple of Epiphany 2 Temple of Triumph 1 Temple of Enlightenment | Sideboard (15) 1 Dovin's Veto 2 Fry 2 Revoke Existence 2 Devout Decree 1 Ashiok, Dream Render 1 Kaya’s Wrath 1 Mass Manipulation 1 Enter the God-Eternals 1 Sarkhan the Masterless 1 Time Wipe 1 Casualties of War 1 Emergency Powers |
- Cards added – main deck: 21
- Cards added – sideboard: 4
- Total: 25
Bolas for the Win?
One more thing you could do is to get Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God and Planewide Celebration to your sideboard for a wombo combo. With Fires in play, you first get Bolas and Celebration with two Fae of Wishes. Next turn (if your opponent doesn’t have a legendary creature or planeswalker in play) you win the game by casting Bolas and proliferating four times with Celebration.

This combo is really wonky, so we didn’t put it in the decklist. However, if you do like it, go for it!
