So far, Wizards have released over 100 Commander precons. However, not many were so highly anticipated as Marvel Commander decks. (Scheduled for 2025.) In this article, you’ll find everything we know about them so far.
I’ll also share my predictions and speculations about this release, but just keep in mind that these might or might not come true. Those are just my educated guesses based on the similar releases from the past.
Four Decks in the First Marvel Set?
It’s been confirmed that there will be multiple Marvel sets. Makes sense, as there are just so many characters, and stories you can’t really can’t do them justice with one booster release and some Commander decks.
But how many precons will be released in the first Marvel set? Well, the most likely number is four. So, far that was true for multiple Universes Beyond releases, including the most recent, Fallout Commander decks.
Which themes could these decks feature? Let’s speculate.
The Three Likely Themes
We can probably expect each deck to represent a faction in Marvel. But how will they split their heroes and villains? I think the following three themes are quite likely:
- Avengers
- X-Men with Brotherhood of Mutants
- Villains
This split makes a lot of sense. The two largest Marvel organizations, and a deck with a variety of villains put together like some previous Universes Beyond Commander sets.
But what about the fourth deck? I feel there are multiple options that make sense. But let’s leave that fourth deck and circle back to it later. First, we’ll discuss how the first three Marvel Commander decks could look like.
Avengers
Honestly, I think it’ll be funny if they made a red-white-blue deck with Captain America as the main commander. It could also be interesting if, with partner effects, they created a 4 color deck with all colors except black. This way there could be a variety of partner commanders. Considering the Avengers need to work together, this would be an interesting way to represent that and also give a variety of heroes.
Most Commander precons feature three potential commanders, with one in the center. I feel it would make sense for the three main Avengers, Captain America, Ironman, and Thor, to be built around equipment and artifacts.
I expect the deck to mostly contain legendary creatures, similar to the Blast from the Past deck from the Doctor Who Commander decks. The Avengers leave little room for non-legendary creatures compared to the other options.
X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants
It feels that Wizards need to combine X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants for a deck focusing on mutant creatures. It also fits story-wise, given how many times members of each group have worked together or changed sides.
The mutants should probably be all five colors. It represents the variety and chaos of mutations and also allows the variety of colors for heroes and villains. Five colors can also be represented with Red Phoenix, Magneto, some versions of Professor X, and other characters.
They could use mutant creatures and, to represent the mutations, focus on keyword counters. Many can work like Helica Glider, letting you choose between the counters and abilities you want.
Villains
What colors can we expect for the villains’ Marvel Commander deck? In the previous sets, we’ve seen Mardu or Grixis combinations. This time around, Grixis makes more sense, since blue allows brainier villains to work together. It’s hard to imagine villains like Doom, Loki, or Kang without blue mana.
I can see a token focus on many of these characters, with Doombots, Ultron copies, and Loki illusions.
A lot of Commander decks will feature legendary creatures that work with slightly different themes. For example, this deck could use tokens that copy other creatures and artifact tokens. They could also include villain minions, such as A.I.M. agents that work with artifacts.
Possible 4th Commander Decks
That’s it for the first three decks. Now, it’s time to speculate on what could be in the fourth one.
Street Level Justice
If they did a street level hero deck, I can’t imagine a main commander besides Daredevil. Easily the most popular of the Defenders from the Netflix series, he’s the first one to get a series through Disney+ and appear in non-Netflix series/movies.
I see Daredevil being red-white or red-white-black, given his strong code of ethics that frequently conflicts with his violent, ruthless methods. So it makes sense for the deck to be either of those sets of colors.
The others could join this aggressive style with abilities focused on attacking and gaining abilities to deal extra damage or help your creatures survive attacking.
Outer Space
If they go the alien route, I imagine a heavy focus on the Guardians of the Galaxy, given their popularity boom, thanks to the movies. Starlord would likely be to be a main commander, and he could focus on the variety of elemental gun effects by picking an ability every time he attacks. Red-green-blue is likely, since that allows a mix of wild animal aliens and science fiction aliens with spaceships.
I feel it would be fun to get Groot and Rocket Raccoon as partner commanders. Groot as green and Rocket Raccoon as red-blue would make sense. Groot gaining counters and Rocket removing them to deal damage to creatures or players.
They’s also a large variety of alien characters like Silver Surfer, Galactus, the Skrulls, and the Kree. Thus, it shouldn’t be too hard to fill out a deck with this theme.
Hocus Pocus
Of course, Wizards could also make a deck focused on magical heroes and villains. Doctor Strange is one option for the main commander, but I feel Scarlet Witch would be a better fit. That way they can go red-blue-black for a mix of wizards and demons.
An interesting ability for Doctor Strange would be giving rebound to your instants and sorceries.
They could include Ghost Rider, who would likely work similar to Stuffy Doll where he can deal damage to creatures equal to the damage they dealt to represent his Penance Stare.
