Final Fantasy Starter Kit Guide: Contents & Review

Are you looking for information about Final Fantasy Starter Kit? In that case, you’re in the right place. In this article, we answer any question you might have about this product, including:

  • What are the contents and decklists of Final Fantasy Starter Kit?
  • Are the cards in Final Fantasy Starter Kit random?
  • Is Final Fantasy Starter Kit a good product to buy?
  • And more!

Let’s start by examining what you can expect when you open one of these.

Final Fantasy Starter Kit Contents

Final Fantasy Starter Kit MTG

Each Final Fantasy Starter Kit contains the following:

  • 2 ready-to-play 60-card decks
  • 2 cardboard deck boxes
  • a play guide booklet
  • a code to unlock both decks in MTG Arena (redeemable twice)

The two decks are non-randomized, which means that all FF Starter Kits contain the same 120 cards. All of them will be set in the Final Fantasy universe – new cards, reprints, and even basic lands.

As far as the rarities go, there are 5 rares and 1 foil mythic rare in each of the two decks. The rest is a mix of commons and uncommon. However, since all Starter Kits contain the same cards, the rarities are mostly a cosmetic, showcasing the stronger cards in the deck. (Don’t expect the mythics to fetch a high price on the secondary market.)

The cardboard deck boxes aren’t particularly sturdy. They can store your cards, but only if you don’t use sleeves. If you do, you’re going to want to pick up a proper MTG deck box instead.

The play booklet is an okay way to learn the basics of the game. The better option is probably with a help of another player or MTG Arena, the F2P digital client. Since you’re also getting a code for both decks there, you’re already encouraged to try it out.

Don’t forget that you can redeem the code twice, so you can share it with your friend. With, that said, let’s take a look at the decks.

Cloud (Red-White)

The first deck is centered around Cloud, the protagonist of Final Fantasy 7 and contains white and red cards.

Cloud, Planet’s Champion is all about Equipment. If you’re just starting with Magic, that’s an artifact subtype, which represents various weapons and tools. The most iconic weapon in the deck is certainly Ultima Weapon.

For a Starter Kit card, Cloud seems a pretty solid one. Building a fun and semi-competitive Commander deck around it is certainly possible.

The first ability can make Cloud into a massive attacker, which will be hard to deal with. Sure, it needs to be equipped, but in a deck full of equipment, that shouldn’t be too hard.

Plus, the second ability helps with that is it makes equip abilities two mana cheaper. (As long as they target Cloud.) Cost reduction is always powerful and this will likely be the cast with this red-white legendary too.

Sephiroth (Blue-Black)

The other deck is blue and black and naturally features Cloud’s nemesis, Sephiroth.

4/4 for six mana isn’t particularly large, but Sephiroth, Planet’s Heir can grow with +1/+1 counters when opponents’ creatures die.

At least some will probably die as soon as it enters, due to its first ability giving opponents’ board -2/-2. The card is quite reminiscent of Massacre Wurm, which certainly isn’t a bad place to be. Once again, this is a solid card as far as Starter Kits go.

As for the deck, this one is probably a bit more controlling and less aggressive. You’ve got some fine removal and card advantage here, along with a few graveyard synergies.

There’s a cool flavor win with Aerith Gainsborough, since it’s a 2-toughness creature. That means that Sephiroth can kill her right away. (Almost 30 year old spoiler alert!)

Is Final Fantasy Starter Kit Worth Buying?

Now you know what’s inside the Starter Kit, and what the two decks are about. But is this actually a good product? Should you go for it, or rather save your money?

Card Value

Well, if you’re expecting expensive rares and chase mythics, then this product isn’t what you’re looking for. The cards are predetermined, and typically not worth much on the secondary market.

However, that doesn’t mean that the cards in the deck are worthless. Given that some cards are exclusive to these decks and at least playable in Commander, they are actually worth a few bucks. Most notable ones include both face legendary cards, as well as Deadly Embrace, Rosa, Resolute White Mage, Ultimecia, Temporal Threat, and Ultima Weapon.

Given the contents of previous Starter Kits, this is a very welcome surprise and a valid reason for purchasing the Kit.

Play Value

Furthermore, if you’re a beginner and you enjoy Final Fantasy, this is an even better product for you. It contains everything you need for a 2-player game. You just open the product, and you’re ready to go. Plus, these decks aren’t too complex, as opposed to something like Commander precons. You’ll get the gist of the game in no time at all.

Furthermore, if you adore both Magic and FF, the Starter Kit is also an awesome purchase. You can use this as a self-contained board game, which you can use to teach your friends Magic. Or just use it as a cool addition to your collection.

Low Price Makes a Great Buy

Why are we so high on this product, you might ask. Well, the big reason is its price. You can get it for around twenty bucks at most online retailers. (Check price on Amazon.) This makes it one of the cheapest MTG products, besides single booster packs. At that price point, it’s really hard to go wrong with it.

Especially, since the product looks really fun, and might even have some useful cards for Commander, as we’ve seen from the two already previewed legendaries. Just don’t buy it expecting to get brokenly powerful decks.

Conclusion

That’s all about Final Fantasy Starter Kit. Do you like this product? Let us know in the comments.

Oh, and one more tidbit about these two creatures – they’re actually part of a panorama, another masterpiece from the amazing Magali Villeneuve:

Last but not least, there are other stronger legendary creatures from Final Fantasy. You can find them in our article about Final Fantasy Commander precons. Some of them are from FF7, just as Cloud and Sephiroth, but other installments of this iconic gaming franchise are also present.

Until next time, have fun and enjoy playing with the Final Fantasy Magic cards.
