The first regular Magic set of 2023 is Phyrexia: All Will Be One, as with every other set, players are considering whether to buy or even preorder some of its products. There isn’t one unambiguous answer that would be right for everyone, as there are so many different types of products, plus players as well. That’s why today we’ll take a look at all Phyrexia: All Will Be One products and see if they’re worth buying.
We’re starting with the most common Magic product – booster boxes.
Phyrexia Draft Booster Box
Draft boosters are, of course, meant for drafting. If you want to organize a Draft or Sealed tournament at home, then you’ll want to pick up this booster box. It’s a bit early to say for sure if Phyrexia: All Will Be One will be a good draft format. However, most of the recent MTG sets were at least solid for drafting, and we see no reason for that to change now.
On the other hand, if you’re planning on just opening boosters for fun, then this product isn’t that great for you. It will be full of so-called “draft chaff”. These are commons, which are necessary for Limited formats to work, but are unexciting to most collectors. In that case, you’ll probably get more enjoyment out of the next two products.
Phyrexia Set Booster Box
Set boosters contain more exciting cards, and are great to open without spending too much. A single Set booster will, on average, contain more rares than a single Draft booster, however it is also slightly pricier. In our Set Booster Guide, we did the math – most of the time you’re getting the same amount of rares per dollar spent in both booster types.
So why would you want to get a Phyrexia Set booster over a Collector booster? Well, instead of some random commons, you’ll get cards with alternate art, and multiple slots in which you could get a rare, and a chance for a card from The List. (It contains various cards from all over Magic’s history.)
As you can see, it will be much more fun to crack open a Set booster.
Phyrexia Collector Booster Box
Now this is an even more exciting booster box to get. However, as you can imagine, it’s also the priciest. Collector boosters contain multiple rares (5-6 per pack), and all cards in the pack are either in foil or have special art treatment. Sometimes even both!
The Phyrexian Collector boosters will surely contain some splendid cards, and if you have the extra money, it can be an amazing product to buy.
Phyrexia Jumpstart Booster Box
The idea of Jumpstart boosters is that you shuffle two boosters together, and you have a deck in your hands. Your opponent does the same, and you’re ready to battle, as the packs already contain enough lands.
This is a nice product for either beginners or for players who want to play some casual Magic. However, we wouldn’t recommend you to get the whole booster box, as there aren’t that many different themes, and you can quickly start getting the same ones. If you really want that Jumpstart experience, you should get a standalone Jumpstart product, such as Jumpstart 2022.
Another option that you have are bundles. Bundles are great if you want to open some Phyrexia boosters, but don’t want to spend so much to get the whole booster box. They also come with some additional accessories, which booster boxes don’t have. For players who just want to crack some boosters of the new set, and get some additional cool items, the Bundle is the perfect choice.
This time around, there are two different bundles that you can get. Let’s take a look.
Phyrexia Regular Bundle
First up, here’s the regular bundle. It contains 8 Phyrexia Set Boosters, 20 foil and 20 nonfoil basic lands, a spindown, and a promo card. Everything is packed up in a nice storage box.
This is the most moderately priced product when you’re going for multiple Set boosters. If you want the extra stuff, then it becomes an even better buy.
Phyrexia Compleat Edition Bundle
You might have noticed another, more special Bundle. The Compleat Edition Bundle costs more than the regular one, but it does come with 12 Set boosters, and with a special Compleated booster.
That’s a very unusual booster, which comes with 10 full-art basic lands, and 2 guaranteed mythics. All cards have a special “Phyrexian oil” treatment. You can find more about it and other Compleat Bundle contents here.
The biggest reason to pick this Bundle is that you really want to get the Compleated booster. If you don’t care much about it, you’ll be better off with the regular Bundle.
Phyrexia Commander Decks
For the fans of Commander format, the preconstructed decks are probably the best product to buy. For a fair price, you get a complete 100-card deck, which is ready to play out of the box. Furthermore, these also come with sample Collector packs, which contain two exciting cards.
A majority of the cards are reprints, but each deck gets around 10 cards that appear here for the first time.
This deck uses the new mechanic called toxic and poison counters, in a new an interesting way. Usually with this kind of decks, the goal was to get your opponents to 10 poison counters, and win the game that way.
However, it looks like this deck will also use the poison counters to get value in other ways. For example, there’s another new mechanic called corrupted, which gives you a bonus if an opponent has at least 3 poison counters.
So if you like to play with the newest mechanics, this can be a great buy for you.
This deck has a more traditional theme, although it has a twist. The big focus of the deck is attacking with tokens. As such, this deck is a great acquisition if you enjoy playing aggressive token decks.
You can find more in-depth information, and both face commanders, in our Phyrexia Commander Decks Guide.
Of course, if you don’t enjoy Commander, then these precons aren’t for you.
Should You Buy Phyrexia: All Will Be One? – Recap
Now you know which Phyrexia: All Will Be One products are available. But how to decide which ones – if any – to get?
First, you should check the Phyrexia: All Will Be One spoilers, and see how many cards, you’d actually be excited to open. If there aren’t many of them, then you should just go with singles. On the other hand, if you do enjoy lots of them, then you should pick one of the boosters that most suits your needs.
If you mostly play Commander, you might want to just get one or both Commander precons, depending on which colors you prefer. Of course, if none of the decks are to your liking, then you can just stick with the boosters.
As far as the long-term value of the set goes, it can be quite hard to predict how well this one will do. We’ll update this article with more information, when the whole set gets previewed.
Finally, if you don’t have enough disposable income right now, you should totally just skip this set altogether. There will be many more Magic sets in the future, when you’ll hopefully be in a better place money-wise.
So, that’s it for today. Now you should be able to make a good decision on which Phyrexia: All Will Be One products to buy or preorder. If you have any additional question, don’t hesitate, and leave a comment below.
Until next time, have fun, and may you get some amazing pulls in your Phyrexia: All Will Be One boosters.
