Squirreled Away Precon: Decklist & Spoilers

Squirrel fans, rejoice! For the first time ever, Wizards are releasing a Squirrel Commander deck, and the hype is unreal. Even amid so many recent releases, this deck does feel special.

In today’s article, we’re going to talk about this Squirreled Away precon in great detail. We’re going to share our predictions and present you with the currently revealed info, including the main commander. Some parts of the deck are yet to be revealed. We’ll share the exact dates on when to expect that.

With that said, let’s get right to it!

Squirrels Everywhere

Essentially, this is going to be a typical tribal deck. This means that plenty of cards in the deck refer to a specific creature, in this case Squirrels.

So, the deck will include Squirrel cards and cards that create Squirrel tokens. Some cards will buff Squirrels, and others will give you additional uses for them. or are Squirrels themselves. All in all, there’ll be no shortage of actions to take with Squirrels.

Hoarding Tokens

The other line of text on the packaging mentions hoarding tokens. We’ve already expected Squirrel tokens, but what would hoarding mean?

Based on the main commander, there will be payoffs for controlling a lot of tokens at the same time. That’s extremely flavorful for the squirrels. (They’re kinda like Starks from Game of Thrones, always preparing for the upcoming winter.) So, if you like having tons of tokens in play, that’s another reason why you’ll probably enjoy this precon.

Squirreled Away Decklist

The full decklist will be revealed on July 18, 2024. So, mark your calendars and make sure to check back then. It’s probably happening sometime in the afternoon/evening if you’re in Europe, and in the morning/mid-day in the USA.

Here’s what we know about the deck so far:

1 Hazel of the Rootbloom
1 Chatterfang, Squirrel General
1 Sol Ring

One card’s previewed window isn’t working, because it’s a brand-new card. You can see it, in the following section.

Squirreled Away Spoilers

The first two spoilers dropped on Tuesday, July 9th. For the rest, we’ll probably need to wait until the previously mentioned date, July 18th. But for now, here’s the main commander of this precon:

You’ll be able to generate a bunch of mana if you ever untap with Hazel. Plus, it only needs to survive until the end of the turn for you to get value from it. You can copy another token for free! Plus, if that token is a Squirrel, you’ll get two copies total. What’s not to like? There are surely some combos you can do with that.

The second card is a reprint, and a very welcome sight. Its price was increasing, and if it wasn’t reprinted here, it would skyrocket. We’re talking of course about the iconic Squirrel commander, Chatterfang.

If you don’t want to miss additional spoilers, you can follow us on Instagram or Facebook. We’ll post soon after they become previewed. Plus, you can check out some MTG memes while you wait.

Squirreled Away Upgrade Ideas

Sure, it’s too early to make any kind of real upgrade suggestion, since we’re without the full decklist. Furthermore, any Squirrel card has a high chance of being reprinted in this precon, anyway.

Nevertheless, there is one card that I wanted to highlight, as it has multiple upsides. It’s a nice piece of a Squirrel deck, has lower chance for a reprint, and is fairly cheap right now. This means it might be a good time to pick it up and avoid any potential price spikes. I’m talking about:

Cloakwood Hermit

If you aren’t the most enfranchised player, you might not know what MTG backgrounds are. They work with legendary creatures that use the ‘Choose a background’ text. For example, take a look at Sarevok, Deathbringer. With those, you can then play both your commander and a background enchantment from your Command Zone.

Now, it’s unlikely that a background commander will appear in the Squirreled Away precon as the secondary commander. Thus, Cloakwood Hermit probably won’t be reprinted here.

However, you can also play backgrounds as regular enchantments in your 99. This one might be quite useful in a Squirrel deck. If you can enable it, you’re getting two Squirrel tokens on each of your turns, which can be quite handy.

Squirreling Away

Anyway, that’s it for today. Of course, this is until next week, when even more details about the Squirreled Away precon become known.

In the meantime, there’s no shortage of exciting stuff to check out. First up, if you like the cuteness of this deck, you’re probably going to enjoy the other Bloomburrow Commander decks as well.

That isn’t your cup of tea? No worries, there are over a hundred different Commander precons, so there’s surely at least one that’s perfect for you.

Finally, let us and our readers know what you think about the Squirreled Away precon. Does it look good? How many Squirrels will be included? There are still certainly quite a lot of details to figure out.
