Squirrel fans, rejoice! For the first time ever, Wizards are releasing a Squirrel Commander deck, and the hype is unreal. Even amid so many recent releases, this deck does feel special.
In today’s article, we’re going to talk about this Squirreled Away precon in great detail. We’re going to talk about what the deck is trying to do. You’ll find decklist, as well as the new cards which were revealed on July 18th. Finally, there are also some recommendation for which cards to add to the precon. As you can see, there’s plenty to talk about, so let’s get right to it.
Squirrels Everywhere
Essentially, this is going to be a typical tribal deck. This means that plenty of cards in the deck refer to a specific creature, in this case Squirrels.
So, the deck will include Squirrel cards and cards that create Squirrel tokens. Some cards will buff Squirrels, and others will give you additional uses for them. Some are just good and useful Squirrels themselves. All in all, there’ll be no shortage of actions to take with Squirrels.
Hoarding Tokens
A bit of a secondary theme are tokens. Of course, there are a lot of Squirrel tokens, but some others, such as Food or Rats are present too.
What will you want to do with those tokens? Hoard them, as is quite on point for squirrels. (They’re kinda like Starks from Game of Thrones, always preparing for the upcoming winter.) Thus, if you like having tons of tokens in play, that’s another reason why you’ll probably enjoy this precon.

Squirreled Away Spoilers
First up, here’s the commander, Hazel of the Rootbloom.
You’ll be able to generate a bunch of mana if you ever untap with Hazel. Plus, it only needs to survive until the end of the turn for you to get value from it. You can copy another token for free! Plus, if that token is a Squirrel, you’ll get two copies total. What’s not to like? There are surely some combos you can do with that.
Now to the rest of new cards. With your commander, there are 10 new cards that are exclusive to this precon.
Squirreled Away Upgrade Ideas
Here are some interesting upgrade ideas for this deck. I try to aim for cards that are both good and fun, but if you have a better idea of great inclusions, let me know in the comments below. Springheart Nantuko
This card was just recently printed in Modern Horizons 3, but is steadily climbing in price. It looks like it might become a green staple, so now is a good time to acquire it. Particularly since it’ll work so nicely in this deck.
You put it on a non-legendary Squirrel, and make a copy of it. Then, Hazel can copy it twice. That’s not that hard to accomplish, and even putting it on non-Squirrels can be good. Just imagine getting multiple copies of Deep Forest Hermit.
Parallel Lives
Finally, here’s the token doubler. While it’s less expensive than Doubling Season, it still isn’t cheap. However, it really does make any token deck so much stronger, and twice more fun. It’s going to be a lot easier to control a bunch of tokens in play, making your commander better.
Cloakwood Hermit
Most of Squirrel cards are included in the deck already, but this background isn’t. If you aren’t the most enfranchised player, you might not know what MTG backgrounds are. They work with legendary creatures that use the ‘Choose a background’ text.
For example, take a look at Sarevok, Deathbringer. With those, you can then play both your commander and a background enchantment from your Command Zone.
However, you can also play backgrounds as regular enchantments in your 99. This one might be quite useful in a Squirrel deck. If you can enable it, you’re getting two Squirrel tokens on each of your turns, which can be quite handy.
